Celtic thrashed Kilmarnock 6-1 on Saturday afternoon.
Speaking to The Record, Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has defended goalkeeper Dorus De Vries following the Hoops’ 6-1 win over Kilmarock on Saturday.
The Bhoys bounced back from a disappointing 2-2 draw at Inverness last week with a ruthless display at Parkhead on Saturday afternoon.
But it did not start off particularly well, with Souleymane Coulibaly opening the scoring with a 35-yard strike which sailed over the head of the Dutch goalkeeper – signed from Nottingham Forest in the summer – on 32 minutes.
Some Celtic fans simply gave Coulibaly credit for what certainly looked a fantastic strike, while others questioned De Vries’s positioning for the concession.
Rodgers, on the other hand, says his keeper was in a “perfect position” and believes all credit must go to the 21-year-old Ivorian.
“I watched it two or three times again and I give the credit to the player,” he told The Record.
“You could say the keeper was in a perfect position, because normally from that distance you would have them further forward but I thought he was in a good position.
“But when you actually see the strike, it would be harsh to say anything against the kid.”
De Vries – who was taken off at the break due to injury – has not hugely endeared himself to Celtic fans following his summer move; so much so that he is perhaps something of an easy target for some supporters at the moment.
