Big Sam is looking like the overwhelming choice for the role.
Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has been speaking today about the England manager job, which is currently vacant after the departure of Roy Hodgson.
The former Liverpool man was himself linked with the job this summer, but was already committed to Celtic.
Speaking to talkSPORT today (13/07/16) he had this to say about the job:
“I think the England job is a wonderful job because of the players and they’ve got so many good people there behind the scenes.
“I think it’s also a very difficult job, the expectancy of it.”
He also went on to discuss who he felt might be perfect for the job – with Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce the man in question, stating:
“You wouldn’t go too wrong with Big Sam. In my meetings with him over the years he’s (clearly) a very intelligent man, very detailed in his approach, he knows what he wants out of the game.”
He also backed Allardyce’s style of play, suggesting his long-ball tactics have been stereotyped for some time:
“He gets labelled a wee bit with this style of football he wants to play but I haven’t seen that so much in recent years.
“I think West Ham played good football at times and so I think he’d be an ideal candidate for it.”

Allardyce, it seems, is indeed the FA’s current preferred candidate.
Sunderland confirmed on their official website today that they had indeed given Allardyce the opportunity to speak to the FA about the vacant manager job with the England national team and it seems he is now the front-runner.
Previous boss Hodgson stepped down after England were sent crashing out of the European Championships in the second round by Iceland.
Rodgers clearly feels the FA would not be going wrong with that appointment.
