Stuart Armstrong completed his move to Southampton from Celtic earlier this week, and Brendan Rodgers has backed his former player to flourish in the Premier League.

Stuart Armstrong officially completed his move from Celtic to Southampton on Tuesday, and his former manager Brendan Rodgers reckons he can score goals and flourish in the Premier League, as reported by Sky Sports.

The Scotland international brought to an end his three-year stay at Celtic Park, and has become Mark Hughes’ first signing of the summer.

He leaves the club with a record of 98 league games played and 23 goals scored, 15 of which came in the season before last in the most productive campaign of his career to date, and Rodgers believes he can channel his goalscoring ability on the south coast.

“It is never easy. He has gone to the most competitive league in the world but he has certainly got all the tools to go down and do well,” Rodgers told Sky Sports.

Brendan Rodgers, Manager of Celtic celebrates following the Scottish Cup Final between Motherwell and Celtic at Hampden Park on May 19, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

“He is physically very good. You need to have good physicality to play in the Premier League down south and he has got that. He has got good power and good speed.

“But what sets him apart from a lot of midfield players is he has an instinct to arrive in the box and score. I think that is something that Southampton have obviously been looking at and feel they maybe need more goals.”

Southampton were pretty toothless in attack last season under Mauricio Pellegrino and then Hughes, scoring just 37 goals in 38 games, and so the need for someone with an eye for goal was clear.

Not only will the 26-year-old bring that, but he is also an intelligent player with good creative instincts in the final third. If Southampton can sign a clinical striker as well, then they’ll stand a real chance of climbing back up towards mid-table.
