Rodgers wants his goalkeepers to be involved in the build-up play – but is Bain comfortable enough with the ball at his feet for Celtic?

Dundee's Scott Bain celebrates victory

Though Craig Gordon’s new three-year deal put an end to rumours linking him with a shock switch to Chelsea and ensured that Celtic will remain in safe hands for the foreseeable future, the 34-year-old cannot go on forever.

And, with injuries continuing to afflict back-up and Brendan Rodgers favourite Dorus De Vries, a new goalkeeper may be high on Celtic’s list of priorities in the summer. Therefore, they could have been given a helping hand after Scott Bain told Dundee that he wants to leave, the Daily Record reports.

The 25-year-old’s future had been in doubt for some time with just one year remaining on his current deal. The Daily Record reported earlier in the year that he had rejected a new contract with Celtic and Robbie Nielson’s MK Dons monitoring the situation.

The highly-rated Bain, who has been tipped as a future Scotland number one, is unlikely to be short of suitors in the summer with Dundee likely to be forced to cash in.

However, if he does indeed make the move to Celtic Park, he is far from guaranteed regular first-team football. Gordon is arguably enjoying his finest season with The Bhoys and has been lauded by Rodgers for improving his footwork and becoming an essential part of Celtic’s build-from-the-back gameplan.

Celtic's Craig Gordon gestures

A goalkeeper in Celtic colours has to do far more than just make the odd save when the opposition dare to attack the runaway leaders. Therefore, Bain would need to demonstrate that he can contribute with the ball at his feet as well.

After all, Rodgers signed his former Swansea number one De Vries for his due to his renowned ability to pick a pass from the back. Therefore, although Bain has a bright future in the game, he must prove that he is more than an ordinary goalkeeper in order to thrive at Celtic.
