The Hoops full-back is believed to be in demand but a reported £15m fee for his services has led to criticism.
Celtic legend Pat Bonner has given his opinion on the transfer speculation linking Kieran Tierney to Arsenal – in particular the reported fee in question and the quality of the interested club, as quoted by BBC Sport.
The Scottish Sun had reported earlier in the day that the Hoops had rejected a £15million offer from the Gunners for the highly rated full-back, the outlet saying it is “nowhere near enough”.
Celtic are believed to be open to offers for Tierney – who has also been linked with Napoli and Leicester City – but with his contract at Parkhead running until the summer of 2023, they are under no pressure to sell.
Nonetheless, there has been some criticism from fans and pundits regarding the fee, including former Scotland international James McFadden, who doesn’t think “that will be even close to tempt Celtic into selling” (BBC Sport).
Meanwhile, former Bhoys goalkeeper Bonner has named a figure closer to the report amount that Celtic are supposed to have set the bar at, namely £25million, although he doubts Arsenal are a “big enough club” for Tierney.
“If Kieran was playing in England, he’d probably be worth about £50m,” he told BBC Sport. “But because it’s Scotland, I would think £25m would be a price you’d start talking about, with add-ons.
“He’s got the ability to go into a club like Arsenal. Whether Arsenal is a big enough club for Kieran Tierney, that’s the question. If you were picking out a player in British football at the moment that can play left-back, himself and Andy Robertson are the best two in Britain, if not Europe.”
Arsenal have been left reeling by another season in which they failed to qualify for the Champions League, having to settle for the Europa League, while their great run to the final last time out ended in a comprehensive defeat to London rivals Chelsea.
