Ronny Deila is leaving Celtic this summer – who could replace him?
Last month, Celtic confirmed that manager Ronny Deila will leave the club this summer, as his rolling contract will not be extended.
The Norwegian arrived from Stromsgodset in 2014, and whilst he won the Scottish League Cup and Premiership last season, his second term in Glagsow hasn’t been quite so successful.
The Bhoys will have edged towards the title in unconvincing fashion, but Deila oversaw disastrous exits from the Champions League and Europa League, and the Scottish Cup defeat to Old Frim rivals Rangers – currently in the second tier – has seen Deila lose his job.
Fans are already wondering who could replace Deila this summer, and bookmakers have been pricing up odds for some of the frontrunners. With odds supplied by Oddschecker, here are some of the main names being discussed today…
David Moyes: The former Celtic defender has long been touted for the role, and will be keen to revive his reputation having struggled at Manchester United and Real Sociedad. Currently the 11/4 second favourite for the job, Moyes is still right in the running for the Celtic job, but he may end up waiting to see if he receives offers from Premier League clubs first.
Michael O’Neill: O’Neill has guided Northern Ireland to Euro 2016 this summer, and his stock has never been higher as a manager. Despite recently signing a new contract earlier this year, O’Neill is ranging between 4/1 and 8/1 for the Celtic job, making him one of the frontrunners to replace Deila – even though Celtic would have to pay a considerable compensation fee to secure him.
Brendan Rodgers: Former Liverpool boss Rodgers has been out of work since October, and suggested over the weekend that Celtic are an iconic club, leading Bhoys fans to consider him as a leading contender. Bookmakers now have him down as the fourth favourite for the job, though Celtic would surely have to break the bank to land him.
Paul Hartley: A new candidate for the job, former Celtic midfielder Hartley has suddenly come into the reckoning, with odds as short as 5/1. The 39-year-old is currently in charge of Dundee, and he has won more than 37% of his games in charge of the Dens Park club. It would be a surprise to see Harley return to Celtic Park as manager, but he’s a young, up-and-coming manager who knows the club inside out.
The favourite – Paul Lambert: Another former Celtic player, Lambert announced last week that he will be leaving Blackburn Rovers this summer, sparking major rumours that he will return to Glasgow. Now the 8/11, odds-on favourite, Lambert would surely be open to a return to Celtic, and the Bhoys wouldn’t have to pay any compensation to land him this summer.
