Celtic assistant manager Chris Davies has insisted that Craig Gordon has responded in the perfect manner after he was dropped from Brendan Rodgers’ side in recent weeks, The Scottish Sun reports.

The 33-year-old had been the Hoops’ number one since his arrival at Parkhead was swiftly followed by Fraser Forster’s departure in 2014.

And while he remained in that role at the beginning of Rodgers’ tenure, an inconsistent start to the season coupled with Dorus de Vries’ arrival, saw the former Sunderland stopper left out after a howler in their Champions League qualifier with Hapoel Be’er Sheva.

But despite missing big games against Aberdeen, Rangers and Barcelona, Davies has suggested that Gordon has showed no signs of bitterness towards the manager or the man who replaced him.

“We’ve got two goalkeepers fighting for one position,” he said, as reported by The Scottish Sun.

“Craig is a fantastic professional and has handled it really well but there’s competition in all areas of the squad. Dorus is a very experienced goalkeeper and a switched-on guy.”

De Vries’ time between the sticks has arguably been just as eventful. The Dutchman is yet to keep a clean sheet – which is perhaps somewhat forgivable given some of the opponents he has faced – and has conceded 11 times in just four games.

And Davies added that the current number one’s place could also prove to be under threat if his form dips in the coming games.

“He knows that, just like every player, you have got to go out and perform,” he added.

With the former Swansea man yet to stamp his authority on the position, Gordon’s attitude may be motivated by the fact that if de Vries’ current form continues, Rodgers may feel that he may have to make yet another change.

And if Gordon continues to impress in training, the Northern Irishmman is likely to have fewer doubts about giving him another chance.
