Early days, but Jeremy Toljan looks like he could be a great signing for Celtic.
Toljan, who joined Celtic on loan from Borussia Dortmund last month, has impressed in his first two games under Brendan Rodgers – a 2-0 win over Hibernian, and a 5-0 demolition of St Johnstone.
The Hoops were linked with a number of right-backs during the January transfer window and, according to Gianluca Di Marzio, Rodgers failed with an £8.8 million offer for Atalanta defender Timothy Castagne.
If true, it could be a blessing in disguise.
Toljan already looks completely in tune with the rest of his Celtic team-mates, especially going forward.
There is nothing to suggest that Rodgers isn’t better off with the German rather than Castagne, who the Hoops would’ve had to break their club-record transfer on, if £8.8 million was rebuffed.
Plus, there is every chance that Toljan will cost less than Castagne this summer if Rodgers wants to make the move permanent, which seems possible.
Toljan turns 25 in August. Dortmund haven’t loaned him out to aid his development, in the same way Paris Saint-Germain have with Timo Weah or West Brom with Oliver Burke.
The Bundesliga leaders don’t strictly need him and hopefully this benefits Celtic if and when they try and negotiate his permanent transfer.
