The Hoops interim boss came under some criticism following his passionate celebrations at Dens Park.
Celtic legend Anton Rogan has given his thoughts on Neil Lennon’s return to the Parkhead dugout as well as his celebrations against Dundee last time out which proved controversial amongst some followers of Scottish football.
In the Hoops’ Scottish Premiership game away at Dens Park, Odsonne Edouard got the only goal of the game in the 96th minute, after which Lennon ran the length of the pitch before grabbing the corner flag in celebration.
The moment was met with some criticism, including from BBC pundit Tom English, who is quoted by The Scottish Sun as having described Lennon’s celebrations as “way over the top” and “a touch embarrassing”.
Rogan, who made upwards of 100 Celtic appearances between 1986 and 1991, believes that Lennon never did anything wrong in celebrating as he did, given his side scored a goal deep into injury time, and also thinks the Hoops faithful will appreciate his passion.
“I think it’s a fantastic move for the club to appoint Neil Lennon,” Rogan is quoted by the official Celtic website as saying. “He’s a perfect for the club. If you look at what he did as a player and as a manager at Celtic, you can see the glove fits. It’s spot-on.
“Watching the celebrations in the last game against Dundee was just fantastic. For Celtic fans, that’s the sort of passion they want to see. He never did anything wrong in celebrating like that. Managers and players get a little bit of abuse for celebrating too much, but hold on a minute, if you get a last-minute goal you should be able to celebrate any way you want, within reason.”
In late February, Lennon was appointed as Celtic manager until the end of the season following Brendan Rodgers’s departure and, on Sunday, will be contesting his firm Old Firm derby since his return to Parkhead.
