Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou has suggested that he’s sure defender Anthony Ralston will be rewarded with a new contract in the near future.

Postecoglou has told the Glasgow Times that he isn’t involved in contract talks and will leave that to people above him.

Ralston’s Celtic contract expires at the end of the season, meaning he will be able to walk away for free.

Postecoglou praised the 22-year-old, suggesting that he has own seen a player eager to learn, despite what others may think about him.

The Australian predicted that Ralston will eventually be rewarded with a new deal, believing Celtic won’t let him go for nothing.

“The club and Michael (Nicholson) are handling those areas,” said Postecoglou. “The important thing for Tony is to keep doing what he’s doing. I don’t think he’s thinking about contracts. He’s thinking about taking the opportunity that’s been given to him this year.”

“Every week he works hard and wants to improve. He’s having an impact in games. Like all footballers, when they do those things, the rest of it takes care of itself – contract issues and all that kind of stuff. That happens pretty naturally when you are performing like he is. I’m sure he’ll get rewarded.”

“Other people might have a different opinion of him but from the moment I walked in, all I’ve seen is a footballer who’s really eager to learn. He really wanted an opportunity and really wanted to take it,” he added.

Ralston’s unexpected Celtic revival

Right back Ralston has been on the Celtic books since way back in 2007 and now has 40 appearances for the Bhoys to his name.

His attacking record in that time is actually very impressive – six goals and four assists in all competitions.

Ralston scored against Hibernian on Wednesday and continues to impress for Celtic under Postecoglou.

Nobody saw this coming.

After loan spells at Dundee United and St Johnstone, combined with playing just once last season, many thought Ralston was finished at Celtic.

It now looks like Ralston could extend his stay at Celtic in an unexpected revival, with Postecoglou to thank.
