With United still concerned over the long-term fitness of last summer’s big-money signing Luke Shaw, they are reluctant to let one of his understudies leave this summer.
21-year-old James is held in high regard by assistant boss Ryan Giggs and Louis van Gaal is more than happy to keep him in the squad, hence handing him a new 18-month deal in February.
However, having impressed during a loan spell with Championship side Huddersfield Town last season, he is understood to be keen on regular first-team football, which will likely mean a move away from Old Trafford.
And interest is strong in James, with Premier League new boys Watford, recently-relegated Queens Park Rangers and Huddersfield all keen on sealing a permanent deal for him.
The interested parties are now waiting to see whether United will relax their stance and agree to a sale.
