Legia Warsaw’s Michal Karbownik has become a wanted man in 2020 – but he has surprised many by staying in Poland.
The teenager has emerged in the Legia ranks, and has now become a first-team star this season with an impressive record.
Primarily utilised at left back despite his ability to play at right back and in central midfield, Karbownik has racked up six assists in 19 league outings this season.
His attacking exploits have resulted in major interest, with The Sunday Mirror (26/04, p68) reporting that Tottenham Hotspur wanted to sign Karbownik.
They had allegedly laid the groundwork for around a year, with Legia allegedly seeking a fee of around £10million for the teenager.
Then, the Daily Record suggested that Celtic were joining the race for Karbownik. They had allegedly scouted him on two occasions, ahead of a potential bid.
Now though, Karbownik has sprung something of a shock by signing a new deal with Legia. They confirmed on Saturday that the defender has extended his stay until 2024.
Karbownik has seemingly prioritised his development and first-team football in these uncertain times, even if it has surprised many.
Celtic and Spurs would be wise to keep tabs on Karbownik moving forward, but a summer move now appears to be off the table.
