Celtic and Rangers will be looking to the Premier League for potential loan deals this summer, and Leeds star Charlie Cresswell should be on their agenda. Both Old Firm sides made loan signings from England’s top tier last season.
Rangers brought in Amad Diallo from Manchester United while Celtic signed Cameron Carter-Vickers – a deal that could be made permanent. Both clubs will be in the market for a central defender in the coming months.
While neither need a first-choice centre-back, both would like cover. Rangers have signed John Souttar and penned Connor Goldson to a four-year deal – but Leon Balogun is out of contract, and Filip Helander is always injured.
- Newcastle and Tottenham want Leeds star, but Elland Road is his best move
- Robin Koch an unsung hero at right-back in Leeds’ final games of 21/22
At Celtic, Chris Jullien could return to France, Stephen Welsh is only good enough as cover and Carter-Vickers does have Premier League interest. Both need another body in there, with a 60-game season on the horizon.
Celtic and Rangers should look at Cresswell: Leeds star open to loan
At Leeds, Cresswell is struggling to break into the side – despite being an England Under-21 regular. The reason, he has four more-senior centre-backs ahead of him in Pascal Struijk, Liam Cooper, Diego Llorente and Robin Koch.
Had he been playing for any Premier League club without four senior options, or a side that plays three at the back, Cresswell would have got a chance. But he is now considering a loan move away from the club.
A move to Celtic or Rangers would not see him play regularly, but it would give the Old Firm sides much-needed depth. Just look at the likes of Welsh, a fringe player. He was still afforded 24 games in all competitions.
He is the kind of player Celtic and Rangers will be looking at in terms of loans from the Premier League. Whether Cresswell would rather join a Championship side where he is first choice, remains to be seen.
