Celtic and Rangers could end up leaving Scottish football as plans for an Atlantic League are progressing.
The much-discussed exit of Celtic and Rangers from Scottish football could be gathering pace, as Danish newspaper BT, as reported by the Daily Record, claim that the Old Firm clubs could be part of plans to create an Atlantic League between teams from six different nations.
It has been a discussion that has gone on for years now – should Celtic and Rangers leave Scottish football and join the English football pyramid? Many people are not in favour of the idea, and it seemed like the issue was finally put to bed after much debating among the powers that be.
However, FC Copenhagen director Anders Hørsholt has revealed that discussions are in place to form the unique league, with teams from Scotland, Denmark, Belgium, Norway, the Netherlands and Sweden all expected to be involved in the initial process.

Hørsholt told BT: “Yes it’s true. If we do not act now, we will see the biggest clubs grow larger and stronger while it will be increasingly difficult for clubs like us.
“We must therefore look at which alternative international opportunities for FC Copenhagen in the future.
“Here it is still too early to talk about specific models, but the discussion of leagues across European borders is a theme that we look at and actively participates in.”

The bizarre idea will likely never come to fruition, but as more questions continue to grow about the Champions League it is certainly interesting to consider the prospect of an alternate competition.
It has always been a popular belief that Celtic and Rangers are in fact too big for the SPL, and many fans point to the inclusion of Cardiff City and Swansea City in the English football pyramid as good enough examples for bringing across the Scots.
Regardless, given how busy of a season these two sides have ahead of them it seems as if the focus should shift back towards their current commitments as opposed to what may or may not happen in the future.
