Back in 2015, Celtic were being linked with a little-known winger in the form of Egyptian ace Trezeguet. The player himself, six years on, confirmed a move to Celtic was close – and now, the Hoops can rectify their mistake.
Six years ago, Trezeguet – now 27 – had decided to leave Al-Ahly and pursue a career in Europe, eventually joining Belgian side Anderlecht. But it could have been very different, had Celtic decided to increase their offer.
Trezeguet, who is currently at AFCON with Egypt, admitted in the summer of 2021 that Celtic had made an offer – and he was going to join them. But the Hoops failed to meet Al-Ahly’s price, and he went to Anderlecht instead.
After a superb spell in Turkey with Kasimpasa – scoring 25 and creating 18 in 71 games – Trezeguet joined Villa, where he has been inconsistent. In his two and a half years at Villa, he has played just 64 times – scoring nine goals.
The Mail now claim that Villa have made the winger available for transfer, after recently bringing in Philippe Coutinho. That is, even with the club about to sanction the exit of Anwar El Ghazi to Everton this week.
Celtic must revisit Trezeguet move, and lure Villa star to Scotland
Celtic do have options out wide. Jota has been incredible, while Liel Abada – given he is only 20 – has been a brilliant signing. Mikey Johnstone, James Forrest and new signing Daizen Maeda as options.
But Forrest and Johnstone have had long battles with injury and Maeda has only just joined on loan from Japanese side Yokohama F. Marinos. Celtic might feel they could do with another body on the flanks.
Villa’s £8million signing Trezeguet can also play as a no.10, or drop deeper and play as an 8 in midfield – like he did for Egypt against Nigeria on Tuesday. If Celtic can get Trezeguet on loan, then they really should.
