Celtic Player of the Year Leigh Griffiths calls Chelsea centre-back the toughest player he’s ever come up against.
Leigh Griffiths celebrates scoring for Celtic
During a Twitter Q&A yesterday, Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths was asked a number of questions by supporters, one of which queried who has been the toughest player the prolific forward has ever faced.
Having played both international and Champions League football, the fact that the player Griffiths named wasn’t an SPL player might not come as a major surprise.
Griffiths replied to the question saying, “Gary Cahill when I played against England at Wembley.”
Chelsea defender Gary Cahill in action for England
Griffiths’ answer comes at a time in which the Chelsea man is being much-maligned for his mistakes in recent weeks. The 30-year-old defender was at fault once more at the weekend, letting Alexis Sanchez through on goal for Arsenal’s first goal in a 3-0 defeat for Chelsea.
The Scotland international labelling Cahill his toughest ever opponent is timely and high praise then, and a reminder of what a fine player Cahill can be if Antonio Conte can get the best out of him.
The game Griffiths referred to was Scotland’s 3-2 defeat to England back in August 2013, in which Rickie Lambert scored the game’s winner on his international debut. Griffiths himself was a 73rd minute substitute for Kenny Miller. It proved to be the Rangers forwards last outing for Scotland.

Griffiths, who has 7 goals in 9 games so far this season, answered an array of other questions during the Twitter Q&A. The forward said he was happy with his 75 rating on FIFA 17, but felt he should have been rewarded with higher passing stats.
Away from the virtual world of football, the former Wolves striker declared his free-kick against Hapoel as the favourite goal of his career and reaching the Champions League group stages as the best moment of his career so far.
Cahill, meanwhile, is currently in the news amid reports that Antonio Conte may look to clear out himself, Branislav Ivanovic and even Deadline Day signing David Luiz.
