The Celtic hitman is keen to break into Brendan Rodgers’ starting XI on a regular basis this season.
Celtic hitman Leigh Griffiths spoke to reporters about his hopes of earning more regular first-team action at Parkhead this season, although he did admit that he faces a real battle if he is to usurp Odsonne Edouard from Brendan Rodgers’ starting XI, as quoted by the Daily Record.
The Hoops have made a fairly underwhelming start to their 2018/19 campaign, having taken just 10 points from their opening five Scottish Premiership outings, and Rodgers has received criticism from some quarters, for his failure to adequately strengthen his squad during the summer transfer window.
Selling Moussa Dembele to Lyon on transfer deadline day for around £20 million certainly didn’t help matters, but it does mean that Griffiths now has more of a chance of forcing his way into the Celtic starting line-up.
The 28-year-old spoke to reporters, and highlighted how he still has a real fight on his hands, however, if he is to break into the side on a regular basis, as quoted by the Daily Record:
“The big man (Odsonne) has done well, I can’t fault him. He’s got the shirt just now and I need to try to take it off him. He played well again on Friday and was unlucky with a few chances. I was disappointed to see Moussa (Dembele) leaving but hopefully that gives me the opportunity to go and grab the headlines and grab more goals and try to help the club win more trophies.”
Next up for Celtic is their Europa League clash with Rosenborg on Thursday night, and Griffiths will be hoping for another chance to impress his manager.
