Leeds United targeted Karl Robinson over the summer.

On Sunday, Milton Keynes Dons confirmed on their official website that manager Karl Robinson has left the club by mutual consent following a 3-0 home defeat to Southend United.

Robinson, 36, has long been regarded as one of the Football League’s brightest young managers, and made a real name for himself in his six-and-a-half years in charge of MK Dons.

Robinson guided the Dons to the Championship in 2015, but he couldn’t keep them in the second tier as they suffered immediate relegation back to League One.

With just four wins in 15 League One games this season, MK Dons are hovering precariously above the relegation zone, and it’s no real surprise to see Robinson lose his job.

Intriguingly though, Robinson lost his job exactly five months after he had the chance to leave, with BBC Sport reporting on May 23rd that Robinson rejected a move to Leeds United after a meeting with Massimo Cellino.

Robinson told the Alan Brazil Breakfast Show on talkSPORT earlier today that he didn’t regret turning down the move to Leeds, but Cellino and Leeds may be counting themselves lucky given how events have turned out.

Leeds went on to appoint Garry Monk instead of Robinson, and he has Leeds just three points off the play-offs after a fine start to the season, with many fans no doubt thankful that the former Swansea took the job rather than Robinson.

After Robinson’s struggles in League One this season, owner Cellino may feel that he made a lucky escape when Robinson turned the job down, and whilst Robinson may claim that he doesn’t regret his decision, part of him must feel that he has missed his chance to manage a huge club like Leeds.
