Alex Mowatt’s recent red card saw him become the latest player to suffer a similar fate since leaving Leeds United.
One effect of Leeds United chopping and changing their managers under Massimo Cellino has been a high turnover of players too.
Some like Sam Byram and Lewis Cook have gone on to play in the Premier League, while others like Edgar Cani and Adyran are scattered around in leagues across the globe.
Leeds United owner Massimo Cellino in the stands
One oddity of the Cellino era has been the fact that four of these players have befallen a similar fate – suffering the humiliation of being sent off on their debuts for their new clubs.
Is there a curse on the quartet? Is it merely a strange coincidence?
Alex Mowatt
Alex Mowatt of Barnsley (C) is shown the red card by referee Christopher Kavanagh
Leeds United’s 2014/15 player of the year saw his star quickly fall after Neil Redfearn was removed from managerial duties.
He was sold to Barnsley last month, and went on to suffer a debut disaster for the Tykes.
Mowatt was sent off after 41 minutes in a loss to Wolves for a rash tackle, and has been sat out with a ban ever since.
Stephen Warnock
Derby County’s Stephen Warnock looks dejected
When Stephen Warnock was sold to Derby County there were a number of Leeds fans who were unimpressed with the decision.
Superb performances since from Charlie Taylor showed any concern was misplaced, with Warnock going on to flop at Derby.
He was sent off 39 minutes into his debut for the Rams in a clash with Reading. He was since sold to Wigan Athletic.
Tommaso Bianchi
Tommaso Bianchi at Leeds United
Last February Bianchi was sent on loan to Serie B side Ascoli after failing to earn a regular spot in Steve Evans’ side.
He got off to the worst possible start as he was sent off on his debut during a 3-0 defeat to Cesena.
Fortunately for Leeds, Ascoli were still impressed enough by his commitment to take up an option to sign him permanently in the summer, signing him until 2019.
Matt Smith
Fulham’s Matt Smith looks dejected after a miss
Matt Smith was surprisingly sold by Leeds in 2014, months after signing a new contract.
The striker joined Fulham but got off to a terrible start – dismissed only 18 minutes into his debut.
