Bordeaux goalkeeper Cedric Carrasso has told L’Equipe that he rejected a move to join Sunderland in the final moments of deadline day.

With Vito Mannone out injured for around three months having suffered ligament damage in his elbow, Sunderland attempted to land a goalkeeper on deadline day – but were ultimately left disappointed.

Whilst manager David Moyes does have England’s top young goalkeeper at his disposal in Jordan Pickford, adding a more experienced alternative was a target for Moyes, with the Daily Mail reporting that a bid was rejected for Norwich City’s John Ruddy on Wednesday.

Another goalkeeper Sunderland appear to have missed out on is Frenchman Cedric Carrasso, who appears to have snubbed a move to the Stadium of Light, favouring staying with Bordeaux instead.

Carrasso, 34, has spent almost all of his career in France with Marseille, Guingamp, Toulouse and now Bordeaux, but he did spend a season on loan at Crystal Palace during the 2001-02 campaign, playing just once.

With almost 300 appearances for Bordeaux since joining in 2009, Carrasso has been a mainstay of the Bordeaux side, and was seemingly targeted for a return to England.

Carrasso has told L’Equipe that he did receive an approach from Sunderland in the final stages of deadline day, but felt it wasn’t the right time to return to the England having just returned from a knee injury.

“Yes, at the last second,” said Carrasso. “But it was not the right time; I have just returned from injury and there were other things to do,” he added.

With the transfer window now closed, Sunderland are limited to free agent options, and it may well prove to be slim pickings for Moyes as he pursues a veteran goalkeeper to offer competition for Pickford.
