Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater has been linked with a move to West Ham United, but should he regret leaving Leicester City?

West Ham United are eyeing up a summer move for frustrated Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater, according to a report in the Daily Telegraph.

The Englishman joined Chelsea from Leicester City for £35 million, but has started just five Premier League games for the London club.

At Leicester, Drinkwater formed a formidable midfield partnership with N’Golo Kane, helping the Foxes to the Premier League title.

Yet at Chelsea the two of them have not been given many opportunities to reestablish their obvious understanding of each other.

It looks increasingly likely, then, that Drinkwater will be looking for a new club in the summer, and West Ham have emerged as a possible suitor.

But having at one point played for a history-making Leicester side, one that is continuing to over-perform, would a move to West Ham actually be a backwards step for Drinkwater?

Leicester are comfortably sitting in the top ten of the Premier League, with West Ham nine points behind them in 15th.

West Ham may be considered a bigger club historically, but they are currently only three points clear of the relegation zone and are heading in a considerably worse direction than Leicester.

Drinkwater must surely regret leaving Leicester for Chelsea, who have effectively ruined his chances of a World Cup call-up for England.

And even if he were to join West Ham, he may find it harder to impress than he would if he were part of a positive Leicester side.
