CC Sabathia has given his view on where Jalen Brunson now stands in New York sports history after the Knicks guard led the franchise back to the top of the NBA.

Brunson’s standing changed after he won NBA Finals MVP and helped the Knicks end a championship wait that had stretched back to 1973.

That success has made the comparison with Derek Jeter more serious. Sabathia still made clear that the former Yankees captain remains the benchmark for now.

Speaking in a clip published on 15 June, Sabathia praised Brunson’s rise while drawing a clear line in the debate.

“[Brunson] wins one more you could put him over Jeter,” Sabathia said.

That line is important because it credits Brunson without moving him ahead of Jeter yet. Sabathia’s point was conditional, not dismissive.

Brunson has earned that level of respect. He scored a Knicks Finals record 45 points in Game 5 as New York beat the San Antonio Spurs to seal the championship.

The Knicks’ title was their first championship since 1973. That is why the debate has moved so quickly.

Brunson did not just have a strong playoff run. He became the face of a breakthrough that several generations of Knicks supporters had waited to see.

Derek Jeter still has the New York legacy Brunson is chasing

Jeter remains the harder figure to pass because his case is built on longevity, leadership and repeated championship success.

The Baseball Hall of Fame notes that Jeter was ultimately judged by five championship rings and a Yankees dynasty he captained.

That is the difference in this comparison. Brunson now has the title every Knicks star before him had been chasing for more than five decades.

Jeter has five titles, a 20-year Yankees career and a captaincy that connected him directly to one of baseball’s most famous eras.

He was also a 14-time All-Star, a five-time World Series champion and a 2020 Hall of Fame electee.

Those details explain why Sabathia still gives Jeter the edge. Brunson is no longer outside the conversation, which is the biggest change.

Winning a championship with the Knicks gives him a New York achievement that few modern athletes can match. But Sabathia’s point was measured. Brunson has entered rare company, but Jeter’s fuller resume still keeps him as the standard until the Knicks guard adds another championship chapter.
