The Coventry man had been monitored by Leicester City, Brighton and Hove Albion and Newcastle United, but looks set to go to his native Wales.

Swansea City look to have taken the lead in the race to snap up Coventry City’s hot prospect George Thomas, and seem to have put themselves ahead of Newcastle United in the queue for his signature, as reported by the Independent.

The 20-year-old made himself a hero to the Sky Blue faithful when he scored the winning goal in the Football League Trophy final for Coventry, in a 2-1 win over Oxford United, but is out of contract in a few days and is very unlikely to ply his trade in League Two.

Recently, Thomas played for Wales at the Toulon Tournament and is expected to fetch a fee of £500k through a tribunal, and it seems the plan for Swansea is to loan out Thomas to a Championship club so he can continue his development, rather than leave him in the under-23s.

While Newcastle, Leicester City and Brighton and Hove Albion are closely monitoring the situation, it would appear that a move to Thomas’ native country of Wales is more desirable than staying in England, which will be a blow to those teams given how highly rated Thomas is.

Newcastle’s interest in Thomas is interesting as while he could be a star for the future, given their ambitions, they clearly think he could grow to a level which could see him be a Premier League player for a top eight side, but whether they make a move or not remains to be seen.

For now though, it seems likely that Thomas will sign on at the Liberty Stadium, and would please many of Swansea’s fans given the 20-year-old’s nationality.
