The former Swansea City boss had taken Leeds to seventh in his first season with the club and was expected to stay.

Leeds United have been rocked by the surprise news that Garry Monk has resigned from his position at Elland Road, leaving the club managerless, as reported by BBC Sport.
The Whites have just been taken over 100 per cent by Italian businessman Andrea Radrizzani and there was a 12-month contract extension on the table for Monk, as reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post, with the intention of awarding him a longer deal if he succeeded.

However, instead of signing it like everyone expected him to, Monk has resigned as manager of the club he led to seventh in his first full season, with Leeds finishing just five points outside the play-offs in the end, although with eight games to play, they were eight points clear of seventh place.
With vacant positions at Sunderland, Hull City, Crystal Palace and Watford, it is very much possible that one of those clubs will now make a move for him, but Leeds fans will be devastated as it seemed they finally had someone they were unanimously behind.

Quite where Leeds turn now is another matter, as while there are managers like Aitor Karanka available, this will be a huge blow to the board, and does not exactly start Radrizzani’s reign in a good way.
It also means the club will now be looking for their seventh manager in just three years, which is instability that Radrizzani will no doubt look to put a stop to.
