Despite Derby County coming from a goal down to defeat Barnsley 2-1 in their Championship fixture at the weekend, a fair few Rams fans are relishing the return of Chris Martin.

The 28-year-old Scotland international is currently on loan at play-off chasing Fulham, and scored his 10th Championsip goal of the season in the Whites’ 3-1 victory over Preston North End.

Martin’s future at Pride Park looked all but over when Nigel Pearson let him depart in the summer on loan, however since Steve McClaren has returned to the dugout, he’s since signed a new deal with the Rams.

McClaren’s arrival has also seen Martin try to cut short his loan move, as reported by the Daily Telegraph, with the former Norwich City man incredibly eager to link up again with his former manager.

Derby fans are hoping that Martin’s hold up play can allow Matej Vydra and Thomas Ince to score more goals from the wings, as well as being able to link up with Darren Bent if the pair start together up front.

If McClaren has similar ideas, then Martin will be critical to any success Derby have next season – be it playing in a 4-3-3 or a 4-4-2 – and fans will be counting down the days until his return.
