The former Peterborough United man got his 12th goal of the season at the weekend, despite the Reds’ struggles.

Nottingham Forest striker Britt Assombalonga responded to his critics in typical fashion in the Reds’ vital 3-2 win over play-off hopefuls Reading by doing what he does best – put the ball in the back of the net.

The 24-year-old twice put the ball past Ali Al-Habsi in the Royals’ goal as Forest took a giant leap towards safety, while Assombalonga – who has courted his fair share of criticism among Forest fans this season – redeemed himself in their eyes.

Prior to the brace, Assombalonga had scored just one goal in 12 matches, while also having two glaring misses – one against Blackburn Rovers and the other at Cardiff City – costing Forest valuable points in their battle to survive under new boss Mark Warburton.

However, Assombalonga – who has pledged his international career to DR Congo as opposed to England – only has two players ahead of him in the top scorers list that have a better goal to minute ratio, and they are Dwight Gayle at Newcastle United and Brentford’s Jota.

By his figures, Assombalonga is averaging a goal every 137 minutes – a better rate than Leeds United’s Chris Wood, Bristol City’s Tammy Abraham, Brighton and Hove Albion’s Glenn Murray and many, many more.

Despite having several niggling injuries and going out of form like he did, to have a strike rate like that is truly incredible, and further proof – not that it was needed – that Assombalonga is one of the best finishers in the Championship.
