The remaining Championship fixtures greatly favours one side over the other.
Brighton & Hove Albion’s title aspirations suffered a huge dent following their 2-1 defeat at home to Newcastle United, however there is still hope for Chris Hughton’s side of topping the table.
Glenn Murray’s penalty was cancelled out by a fluke goal by Newcastle’s Mohamed Diame, which was followed by an 89th-minute winner for the Magpies from Ayoze Perez.
However, while Newcastle currently lead the way and have a two-point lead over the Sussex side in second, United will have a lot of work to do if they are to maintain that going by the remaining fixtures.
While Brighton still have to navigate their way past play-off chasers Leeds United and Norwich City, as well as a home match against an expensively assembled Derby County side, Newcastle’s run in is incredibly tough.
Newcastle’s next two fixtures are both away games, and are at third placed Huddersfield Town and fifth placed Reading respectively, while they also have to face play-off chasing Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds and Fulham.
As much of a blow as the defeat was for Brighton, and with Huddersfield’s game in hand looking more ominous now given the six-point gap between the two sides, there is still a long way to go with many twists and turns yet to come and anything can happen between now and May.
