The Blues have won just twice under Gianfranco Zola and are nine points clear of the drop zone.
Birmingham’s Adam Legzdins looks dejected after Nottingham Forest’s second goal
While Birmingham City were unfortunate in their 3-1 defeat against Leeds United, Gianfranco Zola’s side are unwillingly being dragged into a relegation dogfight.
The Blues have won just two out of their 14 fixtures under Zola and now have the second worst goal difference in the Championship, with goals increasingly hard to come by and with the fourth worst defence in the division.
It seems bizarre that a team outside of the play-offs on goal difference when they sacked former manager Gary Rowett are now being talked about as possible relegation candidates, but Birmingham’s form is genuine cause for concern.
Zola’s side aren’t getting a break and are showing some signs of improvement, but it’s a slow process and with teams beneath them realising wins will get them away from danger, Birmingham are being sucked in.

Thankfully for Birmingham, there are teams like Bristol City and Wigan Athletic – both of whom suggesting they’ll struggle to win again this season – which could well save them, even if that nine point gap gets eaten into.
However, while at the start of the season it was being touted that Rowett could take Birmingham out of the division, it now seems as if he may well have kept the club in it.
