Sunderland defensive midfielder Lee Cattermole has revealed to The Northern Echo what manager Chris Coleman told the players at half time against Bristol City.

The Black Cats played out a 3-3 draw with City away from home at Ashton Gate in the Championship last Saturday afternoon.

City were 3-0 up at half time, but Sunderland launched a stirring comeback after the break and managed to get the game to 3-3.

Cattermole, who has been on the books of Sunderland since the summer of 2009 when he joined from Wigan Athletic for a transfer fee reported by The Telegraph to be worth £6 million, played for the entire 90 minutes, and the 29-year-old has revealed what manager Coleman told the players at half time.

“That was the longest 15 minutes I’ve spent in a dressing room at half-time, it was very quiet, very downbeat,” Cattermole told The Northern Echo.

“The manager just asked us to give each other something we could carry in to the rest of the season and be men about the position we were in. No one said too much but I thought we showed a real pair.”

Still work to do

Sunderland may have earned a point at City, but there is no doubt that the Black Cats are in serious danger of getting relegated to League One at the end of the season.

While it is positive that Coleman’s side scored thrice in the second half and that too away from home, the problem is that they conceded thrice in the opening 45 minutes and need to shore up their defence.
