Tony Cascarino believes Jurgen Klopp was wrong to remain loyal to Liverpool duo Simon Mignolet and Dejan Lovren as the Reds were easily beaten 4-1 by Tottenham on Sunday afternoon.

Spurs romped to victory thanks to goals from Son Heung-Min, Dele Alli and a brace from the free-scoring Harry Kane, as Liverpool’s defence failed to deal with the north Londoners’ fluidity.

Croatia international Lovren was arguably at fault for Tottenham’s first two goals, being caught underneath the flight of the ball on both occasions before being withdrawn prior to the half-time whistle.

Former Sunderland goalkeeper Mignolet was also poor, finishing second best in the race to the ball for Kane’s first before flapping at a free-kick that allowed the England striker to claim a brace.

In his Times column, former Chelsea and Celtic striker Cascarino claimed that Klopp must now admit he was wrong to place his faith in Lovren and Mignolet following their errors against Spurs.

“Now is the time for Jürgen Klopp to admit that he was wrong and accept that his goalkeeper and centre half are not good enough,” Cascarino said. “Simon Mignolet and Dejan Lovren cost Liverpool the game yesterday with their errors.

“Klopp has been incredibly loyal to his players — and I respect that, if you believe in someone — but you can’t keep losing because of individual errors. This has to be when Klopp admits that the fans and media were right and that he was wrong.”

Liverpool’s only goal of the game came through summer signing Mo Salah, who latched on to a defence-splitting pass from Jordan Henderson to slide the ball home off the post.

The loss leaves Liverpool way down the Premier League table in ninth position, three points adrift of the top four. They will be looking to ease some of the pressure by beating Huddersfield at Anfield on Saturday.
