Tony Cascarino thinks Aston Villa are due some bad transfer news because he believes Newcastle will win the ‘battle’ for Callum Wilson, as he told talkSPORT (06/09/20 at 7:55 am).

The Daily Mail has linked both the Magpies and Villa to Wilson’s signature, but it seems the England international prefers a switch to St James’ Park.

Wilson struggled in front of goal last season and it resulted in him dropping down to the second-tier with Bournemouth, but that hasn’t stopped Premier League clubs from trying to bring him back to the top-tier.

Former Republic of Ireland striker, Cascarino, described Wilson as a ‘dynamic’ player, as he even hinted that he perhaps has more chance of earning game time under Steve Bruce than Dean Smith.

“Callum Wilson has proved he can be a really good goalscorer for you,” Cascarino told talkSPORT. “He gives you a different dynamic. He’s not so much a leader of the line. He has other qualities that I believe Wesley and Joelinton haven’t got.

“It’s interesting that two clubs, who have made a similar mistake, they might show next season that it took them a year to settle. But no manager, Dean Smith or Steve Bruce, cannot take that risk of ‘is he going to turn up for me this season?’

“I think Newcastle will win the battle. Callum alluded to it that he would rather go there and I would also think he knows that he will definitely start, saying that Villa would probably start him aswell, but I think they have sort of washed their hands with Joelinton.

“Wesley’s still got a bit to show and they brought in Samatta aswell and the young lad Davis. I think he will go to Newcastle more than Villa if the deal can be put together.”

Both Villa and Newcastle made big-money signings last summer, the one-named duo – Joelinton and Wesley.

It could be argued that the Newcastle man struggled the most because at least Wesley could point towards the fact that he scored six league goals up until his season-ending injury on New Year’s Day.

Other than Andy Carroll, Bruce doesn’t have any real options up top, whilst Smith does have January signing, Ally Samatta and Keinan Davis, but they failed to put the ball into the back of the net after the restart, so adding more bite to the final third is very much-needed up in the North East and in the Midlands.
