Tottenham Hotspur and Everton have been linked with Manchester United defender Luke Shaw in the summer transfer window.

Luke Shaw of Manchester United and Jose Mourinho the head coach

Tony Cascarino has suggested in The Times that Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has made a mistake by criticising defender Luke Shaw in public.

The former Chelsea striker believes that the England international left-back’s value will have gone down to Mourinho’s criticism.

Following the Red Devils’ win against Brighton and Hove Albion in the FA Cup at the weekend, the former Real Madrid boss strongly criticised Shaw, stating that he was not happy with the 22-year-old’s performance, as quoted by BBC Sport.

Cascarino, who now works as a pundit for talkSPORT, believes that Mourinho has lowered the value of Shaw, who joined United from Premier League rivals Southampton in the summer of 2014 for a transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £27 million and earns £70,000 per week as salary at the Red Devils according to The Daily Star.

“He was again critical of Luke Shaw and the left back will almost certainly leave in the summer,” Cascarino wrote in The Times about Mourinho. “But who will buy him?

“United paid nearly £30 million for him but they won’t get anything near that when they sell him.

“Mourinho’s comments don’t just destroy Shaw’s confidence, they also mean any interested club will want a cheap deal — no one wants to sign someone so publicly labelled as a failure by another manager.”

Encouraging for Tottenham Hotspur and Everton

According to The Times, Tottenham Hotspur and Everton are contenders to sign Shaw from United in the summer transfer window.

With Mourinho clearly not happy with Shaw, one should not be surprised if the defender decides to leave Old Trafford in the summer transfer window.

That would lower his value in the transfer market, meaning that Tottenham and Everton would not have to spend a lot of cash in order to secure the services of the talented youngster.
