Tony Cascarino has shared that he hasn’t seen Harry Kane ‘as fit and in good shape’ as he currently is now for Tottenham, as he told talkSPORT.

The former Republic of Ireland player highlighted that, at the start of the season, because Kane’s ‘head was turned’, he found it ‘very difficult’ to get going again in Spurs colours.

At the time, there was well-documented interest from Manchester City, and despite all that noise, Kane stayed put in north London.

The words ‘gentleman’s agreement’ did get thrown about quite a lot, as Kane, under the stewardship of Nuno Espirito Santo, started off in a very sluggish manner.

But Cascarino thinks that the 2020/21 Golden Boot winner is now starting to showcase his oldself.

“Harry Kane, I sat here and said he had one of the greatest performances I have seen from a Premier League player against Manchester City,” said Cascarino.

“His performance against Leeds was not far behind that again. If he had played like that in the summer, then England would have been European champions.

“He’s as fit and in good shape than I have seen. He certainly wasn’t that at the start of the season, and rightly so, when you have your head turned, it’s very difficult to get your season going – He was outstanding again.”

There is no doubt that Kane wasn’t himself during the first half of the season, but he is starting to pick up of late.

With Spurs chasing FA Cup glory, including that all-important Champions League spot, perhaps Kane has left his best form until the final few months.

If the England captain can get near the performances he displayed at the Etihad and at Elland Road, then this top-four race will go down to the wire.

Whilst it’s Manchester United who occupies that fourth spot, because there are numerous games in hand to play, it’s hard to really gauge who really is in control.
