Tony Cascarino has controversially claimed that Thiago isn’t ‘as good’ as Gini Wijnaldum and he thinks that it would be a ‘loss’ for Liverpool if the Bayern Munich star replaced the Liverpool player at Anfield.
A lot of rumours have been circulating around about the futures of Thiago and Wijnaldum, as Cascarino made it clear that the latter is the ‘better player’ out of the two, as he told talkSPORT (29/08/20 at 8:50 am).
Spanish outlet Sport previously linked Wijnaldum with a move to Barcelona, whilst it seems Liverpool have been keen on Thiago’s services for some while now, as reported by Bild.
Former Republic of Ireland striker, Cascarino, made it clear that Liverpool will be making a mistake if they were to replace the one-time Barcelona man with their energetic Dutchman.
“You don’t want to lose him,” Cascarino told talkSPORT. “Thiago’s not as good as him, that’s my problem. Wijnaldum is a better player than Thiago. Absolutely!
“Thiago has been in and out of the Bayern team. He came into it late during this campaign. I think he’s a really nice passer of the ball. He moves it around well. [But] I think Liverpool are [potentially] losing a much more competitive player.
“We talk about unsung heroes and players going under the radar. He has been brilliant for Liverpool – I think he’s been terrific. When I see him, his desire to go and want to win the ball. Simplicity at his best where he just sees things early and gives it to the player that needs it.
“He just does a lot of great things. Honestly, Thiago coming would be a loss if it was at the cost of Wijnaldum because I think he’s a terrific player.”
Liverpool’s trophies under Jurgen Klopp

- UEFA Super Cup

- Premier League

There’s no doubt that the Premier League champions could do with Thiago’s services in the middle of the park because his passing range, ability to create space and dictate the tempo of the match would elevate Jurgen Klopp’s midfield.
But the Liverpool fans clearly wouldn’t want to lose Wijnaldum in the process because he is a player who is very reliable and one that would be difficult to replace.
The dream scenario would be for the Spanish defence-splitter to share the same midfield with the previously free-scoring Newcastle player, but that is seemingly unlikely.
