The Portuguese has Sheffield Wednesday in promotion contention for the second season running.
Sheffield Wednesday head coach Carlos Carvalhal
Carlos Carvalhal comments to Portuguese radio station Renascença have caused some concern within the Sheffield Wednesday fanbase.
The conversation was brought to light in the English media by the usually reliable Sport Witness, which claims the Owls head coach’s contract is due to expire this summer.
“I’m not worried [about an extension],” Carvalhal is quoted as saying. “Just focused on doing my job well and the record is very good. In time we will make the best decision for myself and my staff. But without pressure or precipitation.”
It follows a report in the Telegraph last week, which claimed Carvalhal’s Hillsborough future is dependent on whether or not Wednesday, who secured a play-off place last weekend, gain promotion this season.
But should Owls fans be worried? It’s little over a year since the Portuguese agreed to extend his initial 12-month stay in the Steel City, which he later revealed would keep him in his current role until 2019.
“I signed for another three years here,” Carvalhal said, as quoted by Sky Sports. “I didn’t want to sign for that long – I wanted one year – but the chairman wanted three.
Sheffield Wednesday chairman Dejphon Chansiri
“I don’t need four years contract. I don’t need money – I’m good with my life.”
So unless there’s some sort of early get-out clause which hasn’t been reported, either Carvalhal was telling porkies a year ago or Sport Witness have got it wrong on this occasion.
Does Carlos Carvalhal deserve another chance at Sheffield Wednesday – even if the Owls miss out on promotion for a second successive campaign?
