Serbia last night stunned the European game by snatching a late win against Portugal to secure an automatic spot for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. yet it could have been different had Bernardo Silva remained on the pitch.
The Manchester City star was brought off for Bruno Fernandes just past the hour mark with the score at 1-1. Silva had earlier in the game assisted Renato Sanches for the opening goal of the match.
However, Serbia fought their way back into the game, and Fulham star Aleksandar Mitrovic bagged a late goal to snatch the top spot in Group A from Portugal’s grasp.
The result means that the Euro 2016 winners will face a play-off if they are to qualify for the World Cup next year. And for Silva, who earns a reported £150,000-a-week, it will be a huge fixture for his international career.
Indeed, Silva’s performance last night was similar to many we have seen from the City star this season. With the playmaker pulling all the strings for Portugual.
Yet once the midfielder came off on 64 minutes, the game fell away for Portugal as the Iberian nation threw away a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1 at home to Serbia.
