Martin Keown told BBC One, during their live coverage of Everton’s win at Fulham, that James Rodriguez looked ‘tired from the off’ at Craven Cottage.
Carlo Ancelotti substituted the 29-year-old after the hour mark and Keown thinks Everton were ‘carrying him’ when they didn’t have the ball.
It was a much-needed win for the Toffees, who looked more vibrant and energetic against the struggling London side, despite seeing their fightback.
When Rodriguez was being replaced by Tom Davies in the second half, Keown shared his thoughts on Everton’s summer signing.
“Not surprised by that at all [Rodriguez’s substitution],” said Keown. “It feels like at times you carrying him when you haven’t got the ball.
“He looks a little bit tired and he did from the off, to be fair. You know the quality is there but I think it’s the right change [bringing Davies on].”
Rodriguez has changed the fortunes at Everton and that missing spark has now been found in the form of the Colombian star.
Some questioned whether the former Real Madrid man would be able to produce the goods on Merseyside, but at this moment in time, he is shutting up his critics.
Everton want European football at the end of the season, and with a trophy-laden coach on the sidelines, added with the mix of a Rodriguez, Allan, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison, they may have found that mix they have been looking for.
