Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick is ‘delighted’ his Championship team could sign Aaron Ramsey on loan from Aston Villa. The midfielder agreed to a temporary transfer in January.

Boro only finalised terms with the Villans for Ramsey during the final hours of deadline day on Tuesday. The 20-year-old will now spend the rest of the season at the Riverside after an earlier loan spell to Norwich City. He left Carrow Road this January following a knee injury.

The issue he sustained in December forced Ramsey to undergo surgery and he returned to Bodymoor Heath to recover. It was likely to keep the youngster out for a few months. But Carrick hopes to see the Villans gem join team training in the next few days and not weeks.

Ramsey played 20 games for Norwich across all competitions in the first half of the season. His appearances included 18 Championship matches, which returned three goals and three assists. All of the midfielder’s goals came over his four outings prior to sustaining an injury.

Each of his assists, meanwhile, came at the end of August and into September. While Dean Smith was still in charge of the Norfolk outfit when Ramsey made his final appearance with the Canaries. He earned his 13th second-tier start for the team at home to Middlesbrough.

Middlesbrough ‘delighted’ Carrick by signing Ramsey on loan from Aston Villa

Ramsey impressed Carrick, who was overseeing his fifth game in charge of Middlesbrough, as Boro beat Norwich 2-1. The Aston Villa talent created an early chance for Teemu Pukki following his surging run. He also tested Zack Steffen from just outside of the penalty area.

Carrick will now want Ramsey to offer his dynamic presence for Middlesbrough’s midfield during his loan transfer from Aston Villa. It is a deal the Boro boss had targeted for weeks.

“We’re delighted with AJ,” Carrick has said, via quotes by The Northern Echo. “We’ve been tracking him for a number of weeks, even though it came up quite late in the window.

“He went back to Villa from Norwich after an issue and he’s been building back to fitness. So, we’ve been monitoring him and we’re delighted to get him in. He caused us problems when we played against Norwich at Carrow Road.

“He can play between the lines as a 10 or in and around the pockets off the side. He’s a really dangerous young talent and we’re delighted that he’s come and delighted to work with him and help him develop, as well.”

Middlesbrough now marks Ramsey’s third loan transfer from Aston Villa through the Villans product’s young career. He also spent the latter half of last term on loan with Cheltenham Town for 15 League One appearances. The midfielder has only played once for Aston Villa.
