Jamie Carragher claims on Sky Sports Steven Bergwijn has plenty of ability, but the Tottenham star has not shown enough consistency at Spurs. Bergwijn scored his side’s fifth goal during Sunday’s win over Newcastle.
Bergwijn, 24, came off the bench and netted his fourth goal of the season after being played through on goal by Lucas Moura. The Netherlands international finished well, having netted three times during the break.
Joining the club back in January 2020, the former PSV Eindhoven winger has failed to live up to the initial hype surrounding his signature. Just eight goals and 10 assists have come in his 77 appearances for Tottenham.
It must be said that 39 of his 77 games have come off the bench – completing 90 minutes just eight times at Spurs. Carragher said during co-commentary: “There’s no doubt this lads got ability, he’s just not consistent enough.”
Carragher on Bergwijn: Tottenham star needs to leave Spurs
The issue for Bergwijn is that Tottenham have Son Heung-min, Harry Kane and Dejan Kulusevski up top. The front three are working perfectly. It means that Bergwijn is only going to start cup games, or come off the bench.
He needs to join a club where he is settled, where he is a regular in the starting line-up, one that suits his style of play – on the counter. Milan have been linked, but a move to a mid-table Premier League side suits him, too.
