Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher says Everton’s James McCarthy must score more often.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher told SkySports Monday Night Football that Everton’s James McCarthy must score more often.

The midfielder netted his first goal of the season in a 3-0 win at the weekend against John Carver’s Newcastle United.

Carragher said: “I really like McCarthy he’s a fantastic player, but that was his first goal of the season and that’s not good enough. He needs to take it to a new level.”

McCarthy has had an injury troubled season, which has contributed to Everton’s inconsistent form, but he has still managed to make 19 Premier League appearances for the Toffees.

McCarthy has no assists to his name, compared to three he managed last season, but even in 2013/14 he struggled to make an impact in front of goal.

At Wigan his best season came in his final one for the Latics, but even then he could hardly be labelled prolific, and the drop off since joining Everton while existent, isn’t substantial, for goalscoring has never been a big part of his game.

If Everton are looking hard at themselves and trying to find ways to improve upon their predicament where they look like facing an uphill struggle to finish in the top half of the table, a talented player like McCarthy finding a way to add a key element to his game would be a great place to start.
