Sunderland’s Victor Anichebe celebrates scoring their third goal
Speaking on Monday Night Football, Jamie Carragher has praised Sunderland striker Victor Anichebe saying he can be an absolute nightmare to play against.
Anichebe joined the Black Cats on a free transfer in the summer after being released by West Bromwich Albion.
At the time eyebrows were raised about the move, especially given he had managed just nine goals in three seasons for the Baggies.
He has proved himself in their last two games, though, first scoring the winner against Bournemouth before the international break and then playing a key role in the win over Hull City over the weekend.
He is earning rave reviews and Carragher has joined the list, describing the former Everton man as an absolute nightmare to play against.
“There’s been one man who has come in and changed it – and it’s Victor Anichebe. He’s been a massive difference,” he told Monday Night Football.
“I don’t think there’s anyone better with their back to goal than Anichebe. Backing into a centre-back, getting the ball to his feet – I played against him and he’s an absolute nightmare.”

Rather than playing alongside Jermain Defoe as part of a front two, Anichebe has found himself in a front three this season.
It is obviously a formation that is working, with two wins in their last two games seeing them move to within three points of safety.
Credit must be given to David Moyes for making the change and getting results and Carragher says the decision is a good one.
“A problem for David Moyes is that when you have a guy like Jermain Defoe, he’s not really a target man,” he added.
“They’re not going to play great football through midfield so at times they just want to hit the front. The decision to play as a narrow three of Watmore, Anichebe and Defoe is a good one.”
