Gary Neville has told Monday Night Football, which was broadcast live on Sky Sports, that he spotted Everton’s problem against Leeds United within five seconds of the game starting.
Everton were beaten 1-0 by Leeds at the weekend, but the defeat could have been by a greater margin if Marcelo Bielsa’s side had been more ruthless.
Leeds were guilty of missing several opportunities throughout the match, and Jordan Pickford pulled off some fine stops in the Everton goal.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side’s biggest issue was that they simply could not stop Phillips dictating the game.
The Leeds midfielder continuously got hold of possession and spread play for his side.
And Carragher felt that Everton gave him far too much room, due to their tactical system.
“There’s no number 10’s in football now or a second striker to drop off, so I think it’s a debate over who stops the opposition’s holding midfield player,” Carragher said.
“Everton never got it right all day. This is the kick off and the ball goes back to Kalvin Phillips, and within five or six seconds you can identify the problem Everton have got.
“Who’s job is it to be and press him? They never got it right all day.
“Doucoure goes, but he’s not close enough. He’s pressing from too far away.”
Everton have rather come unstuck in recent weeks, after what was a flying start to the season.
The Toffees led the way in the early part of the campaign, but they have now slipped down to eighth place in the table, after losing four of their last five fixtures.
