Jamie Carragher has told The Telegraph that Tottenham Hotspur’s French duo Hugo Lloris and Clement Lenglet are not good enough for Spurs, if Antonio Conte’s side harbour ambitions of finally ending their hunt for a trophy.
Spurs currently sit third in the Premier League table and top of their Champions League group. That is despite a poor recent run of results, in which Tottenham have lost games against Manchester United and Newcastle United.
On Wednesday night, Spurs drew with Sporting Lisbon – a lengthy VAR decision ruling Harry Kane’s goal was offside. So, Spurs are in the mix, but they still seem a way off having the quality to go on an win trophies.
Carragher discussed Tottenham and whether they are at a level in which Spurs will win some silverware. He says that while captain Hugo Lloris remains no.1, and Lenglet – who is on loan – starts, then they will struggle.
“Despite his experience and medal haul, Lloris is not good enough to take Spurs to the next level. Win the big trophies. He is a World Cup-winner. But he makes too many errors and is not the same level as the best around.
“It is a position where Spurs have been lacking for a while. Add the need for a centre-half – Lenglet’s performance against Newcastle was poor – and Conte’s argument that he needs a few more transfer windows is correct.”

Spurs fans will certainly agree on Lloris. The Spurs skipper has been a loyal custodian to Tottenham. But he is no longer the required standard if Spurs want to pick up a trophy. They have been linked with an array of goalkeepers.
Lenglet remains on loan, but Ben Davies is used in a rotational policy. The latter is probably first choice, given his loyalty to Spurs and his bravery on the ball, and in defence. Lenglet is more of a centre-back, Davies a left-back.
Spurs need a goalkeeper and a left-sided centre-back and that will not be lost on Conte, or Fabio Paratici. Next summer, or even in January, it could be something that Conte and Paratici look to address. Time will tell.
