Jamie Carragher has compared Liverpool striker Roberto Firmino to Tottenham’s Harry Kane for the tremendous work he does off the ball.

Harry Kane netted a hat-trick for Spurs in their victory over Southampton to break Lionel Messi’s 2017 record for the most goals this calendar year.

Roberto Firmino scored yesterday against Swansea, his third in successive games for Liverpool, and while the Brazilian will likely never be able to better Kane’s phenomenal scoring exploits, the Merseyside favourite shares a familiar trait with the Spurs forward.

Carragher told SkySports, report The Mail: “We mentioned Harry Kane at half time. Is he as ruthless as him in front of goal? No. But he may even be almost as important to Liverpool as Harry Kane is to Spurs for the work he does off the ball. Don’t forget his role in the first goal.”

Firmino has now scored 15 goals this season in all competitions, and including six in six Champions League games. Kane also netted six goals, in just five games.

He has seven assists to his name too illustrating the extra dynamic he brings to Liverpool’s attack. Kane meanwhile has four.

Firmino is so important for Liverpool and is holding off competition from Dominic Solanke up front, while showing why Jurgen Klopp has discarded Daniel Sturridge as a regular option.

Kane’s goalscoring feats may be uncatchable, but Carragher is right that Firmino’s performances deserve their own credit
