Jamie Carragher has written in his Telegraph column that Liverpool need to make two big signings in the summer and wants additions of a similar calibre to Manchester United summer arrivals Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro.
Liverpool play host to in-form Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday afternoon. Erik ten Hag’s side come into the game having won 18 of 22 matches in all competitions, losing only once. They have won four games on the bounce.
It is a different story at Anfield. Liverpool have won just four of their last 12, and after a 5-2 loss to Real Madrid and a draw at Crystal Palace – the Reds got back to winning ways last time. A 2-0 win over Wolves in the week at home.
But the difference between the clubs is vast, this season. Whereas Liverpool are struggling, United are improving. They have a game in hand over Manchester City; winning that, they are three points behind Pep Guardiola’s side.
Liverpool’s win over Wolves has seen them jump to sixth, but they are far from firing on all cylinders. Carragher believes the Reds need to improve in the summer – and they require signings like United’s Martinez and Casemiro.
“Klopp will be looking for his own Casemiro and Martínez this summer, a dominant central midfielder and quality centre-back to partner Virgil van Dijk,” Carragher wrote in his Telegraph column, ahead of Sunday’s fixture.

Carragher: Liverpool need signings similar to Martinez and Casemiro
He is bang on. If the Reds had signed Casemiro and Martinez last summer, you would argue that it would see Liverpool in the top four as things stand. The duo have given United a structure that for years, has been missing.
Meanwhile, Liverpool lack a partner for Virgil van Dijk. Joe Gomez is not good enough, Joel Matip seems past it and Ibou Konate is regularly injured. In midfield, the problems are mounting and many are likely to leave in the summer.
Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are out of contract. Thiago is also constantly injured and Fabinho’s form has been woeful this term. The Reds need a signing like Martinez, and a midfielder like Casemiro.
