Jamie Carragher slams former team Liverpool and their chances of winning the Premier League title.
Former Liverpool football player Jamie Carragher sits ringside before the WBC Cruiserweight match between Tony Bellew and BJ Flores.
Jamie Carragher is not very impressed with his former club Liverpool after watching them draw 1-1 at newly promoted Newcastle United in the Premier League.
The Reds are now seven points off leaders Manchester City in the table and just seven matches into the new season, Carragher thinks the title is already beyond his old team.
Liverpool defender Alberto Moreno (L) vies with Newcastle United’s DeAndre Yedlin.
“Do I think Liverpool are a genuine title challenger this season? No. The summer transfer window did not go well for them,” the pundit said on Sky Sports.
“They didn’t fix the problems they needed to in the summer.”
Rafa Benitez and Jurgen Klopp (r) react during the Premier League match between Newcastle United and Liverpool.
The ex-defender was particularly scathing about how the Merseysiders have performed at the back as Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren came into criticism for the Magpies’ goal at St James’ Park.
Manager Jurgen Klopp failed to sign a new centre-back despite the departure of Mamadou Sakho to Crystal Palace and the team have already conceded 12 goals in seven outings – only five others in the division have let in more.
Aside from a commanding 4-0 victory over Arsenal, Klopp’s men have failed to convince for large parts of the 2017/18 campaign with their results and performances.
Wins over Palace and Leicester City were narrow, while they have also drawn at home to Burnley and away to Watford after conceding sloppy goals.
