Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has questioned whether Daniel Sturridge has a future at the club under Jurgen Klopp, speaking to talkSPORT.
The striker has found himself on the periphery at the beginning of this season, starting most games from the bench and failing to find the back of the net.
His absence has largely been down to the fine form of Roberto Firmino, who has shone with three goals in six games as the Reds’ central striker this season.
Many are already questioning whether Sturridge has a future at Anfield, as he does not fit into Klopp’s preferred high-tempo, high-pressing style as well as Firmino does.
And Carragher is the latest to suggest exactly that. He told talkSPORT: “I think when Jurgen Klopp picks his best team – when everyone’s fit – I don’t think Sturridge is in it, at this moment.
“I think Daniel’s goalscoring record alone is fantastic – he would walk into most teams – but Jurgen Klopp wants a lot more than just scoring goals from his attacking players.
“He wants work rate, players coming back to help the team. I think Firmino fits that bill for him at this moment in that central role.”
It remains to be seen if Sturridge does have a future at Liverpool under Klopp, given his current exclusion.
If the Reds continue to impress as they have without him, it is hard to see how he will get himself back into the team.
Should he decide to depart there will likely be a long line of suitors, with his tally of 43 goals in 58 league starts an attractive one, to say the least.
