Carragher mocks Manchester United – and this is why

Manchester United top the possession stats in the Premier League.

Liverpool beat Sunderland last night to draw level with Manchester United on points, and former Anfield hero Jamie Carragher was in the mood to smile.

The former defender poked fun at the Red Devils after learning they topped the possession statistics for 2015.

He told Sky Sports: “They’ve had a lot of criticism Manchester United, so I think supporters should be proud of that.”

Possession Percentage
Man Utd62%
Man City59%
Tottenham56%
Arsenal56%
Liverpool56%

Carragher’s comment was wholly sarcastic, revelling in the chance to mock the team which dominated English football under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Being top of the league for possession is not really a bad thing – if wins and points come with it. Unfortunately for United they do not, winning less games than Leicester City across the calendar year, who have the second lowest possession percentage in the Premier League.

Louis van Gaal’s side do not necessarily have to change their approach, but they do have to start winning matches – so a compromise is due. They showed improvement against Chelsea, being more adventurous in possession, and were only kept goalless by excellent goalkeeping and the woodwork.

Being the butt of Jamie Carragher’s jokes is not a place Manchester United fans want their side to be.
