Jamie Carragher has praised West Ham United’s summer transfer target, Tyrone Mings, for his change in form at Aston Villa and his recent performance against Erling Haaland.
On Friday night, Villa recorded a 1-0 win over Southampton, with Carragher praising Mings for helping his team to three points and a clean sheet, as he told Sky Sports.
Only a couple of weeks ago, he come up against Manchester City’s goalscoring machine in Haaland when Villa held Pep Guardiola’s side to a 1-1 draw.
Steven Gerrard’s men were in a torrid run of form heading into that match, with many questioning the former midfielder’s position at the club.
But Villa, through their grit, determination and belief, picked up a point and then followed it up with three against the Saints – and Mings could argue he was the best player in both.
That was highlighted by Carragher, who has praised the turnaround from Mings, after he was stripped as captain in the summer.
“There was a lot made of the situation with Tyrone Mings at the start of the season and he has come back in,” said Carragher.
“I have commentated on the last two games. He was up against Erling Haaland, yes he got a goal. But he defended really well as an individual and as a team, and it was the same (against Southampton).”
A SUMMER OF NOISE FOR MINGS
When Mings was stripped of the armband, a lot was made of the issue, with many questioning the possible break-up in the relationship between the centre-back and his manager.
There was even talk of West Ham possibly signing the England international, but in the end, he stayed put and so did Craig Dawson.
There’s no doubt that Mings has to look at himself in the mirror because, during these past 12 months, his performances haven’t been up to scratch.
But, he is back up to the pace of things and he is starting to let his football do the talking.
