Former defender and current pundit Jamie Carragher doubts Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge will ever become the club’s number one striker under Jurgen Klopp despite his goal record, he told the Sky Sports studio at around 19:30 ahead of the Reds’ clash with Chelsea.

Sturridge missed the majority of last season through injury, a situation which often frustrated Klopp.

The England international is now seemingly back to full fitness, yet so far this season Klopp has often gone for Roberto Firmino to start upfront with the likes of Philippe Coutinho and Sadio Mane in behind.

Sturridge’s ability in-front of goal can’t be questioned, yet his style of play often clashes with the quick forward movement Klopp prefers and Sky Sports pundit Carragher ultimately fears for his future at the club.

“You still wonder whether he suits anything about Jurgen Klopp, I don’t think he does. I think his quality is maybe on another level to some of the players in the first-team so it’s a conundrum for the manager,” Carragher explained.

“Will Sturridge ever be the number one striker for Jurgen Klopp going forward over the next three or four years? I don’t think so. I hope I’m wrong because his goal record tells you he’s a fantastic talent.”

England's Daniel Sturridge

Sturridge has scored 55 goals in 96 appearances in all competitions for the Merseyside club, yet since the 2013-14 campaign he has managed just 12 Premier League goals amid struggles with injury.

The 27-year-old started the latest encounter against Chelsea, though not long after the half-time interval he was replaced by Divock Origi as the Reds picked up an impressive 2-1 victory.

With plenty of competition for places, Sturridge may have to adapt his game in order to become the club’s number one striker under Klopp or risk falling short of his full potential.
